Hummingbirds and such~

I must brag! Obviously, I make a KILLER hummingbird juice. We've counted, at times, up to 15 or 20 hummingbirds flying around our 2 feeders at once!!! I take this as a compliment, because 8 years ago when we started, we were happy to see 4 to 6. There are LOTS of people in our neighborhood who have feeders, but most are filled with that TERRIBLE, toxic red Kool-Aid that you buy at the store! I have read that it's extremely harmful to the hummingbirds to process the food coloring. If you're buying your juice from a store, make sure it's colored with juice or a natural ingredient- NOT dye!

My recipe: simple, take a bottle (or something that you can store in the refrigerator) and mix 1/2 hot water and 1/2 sugar **I actually use just a little more water than sugar, but not much**. Shake or stir until ALL sugar is dissolved, fill your feeders ONLY 1/4 full (as the heat and sun cause the mixture to spoil within a few days, and mildew will form inside your feeder). After the remaining mixture has cooled, place it in the fridge for the week.

Our feeders are COOL- they have a well on top to put a bit of water; this keeps the ants OFF the feeder. I have used Vaseline in the past around the rope or wire to help with ants too.

So, there you have it. You have the tools next spring to make your backyard a haven for these lovely little birds. We, however, do keep our feeders out until WELL into November here in North Alabama. I may keep them out longer to see if any strays wonder through. We've just always taken them down at that point, but you never know?  :)

**Up next, reviews for Lalaloopsy and a few other Little Tikes items! Christmas is JUST around the corner; how many of you are ready to start shopping for GREAT DEALS?
