Netflix delivers Clash of the Titans yesterday. Wayne and I are both VERY excited, as I am a HUGE fan of the original movie from 1981.
Sam Worthington (Avatar's famed Jake Sully) plays our hero, Perseus. While I don't feel this was a "fail", I find that there were better-suited, lead men. Sam's accent was a bit strange to me, and again, I am disappointed with the fact that there are English accents rolling around with a few that sounded almost Arabic? Directors, if you're going to allow accents, let's be consistent, seeing as how these people are supposed to be from the same AREA!?! Small detail, but it always eats at me while I'm watching.
Now, I will say that I was in love with the effects; nothing too strong, but all believable and satisfying to me. However, this is where pleasant things end for me.....
First off, WHERE was Bubo! Yes, for a whole 3 seconds they showed him. :( To me, he played such a pivotal roll as the "sidekick" in Perseus' journey (in the original). And don't get me started on Io, in this remake. It is obvious that whomever wrote her into the script did NO research of her whatsoever! The god she denied (HAHAHAHAHA) was Zeus, and she actually (eventually) did give in. But her curse was not "agelessness", but being turned into a COW! Shhhheshhhhhhhh people, COME ON! There were many inconsistencies and things from the first movie that should've made it to 2010's version. But then, the lack of research, for anyone who loves Mythology, was just a slap in the face!
The acting, from everyone in the movie, was a bit too whimsical. I'm not sure if the director wanted this, but it took away from keeping this a serious movie! While I love a bit of "goof" here and there, for comic relief, it can be (and WAS) overdone.
Overall, the movie was enjoyable (in an "I'm bored and have nothing better to do" sort of way), but I would DEFINITELY not pay for renting it. It's worth waiting for on TV, and I doubt they'll even cut out the scene where Perseus calls Medusa a bitch! I give it 3 out of 5 stars, only because I am a true fan of 4 members of the cast! ;)
