This and That is good for YOU and your wallet!

Several months ago, a friend of mine sent me a recipe for making homemade laundry detergent. I found a few other "recipes" online, and then the fever hit me! I looked up how to make dish detergent, shampoo, toothpaste....TONS of stuff that may be potentially harmful or just plain EXPENSIVE to buy from the store. And now I make those things at home! :)

Laundry Detergent (my variation):
1 cup of BORAX
*you will find both the Borax and WASHING SODA in most laundry sections of a grocery store-found mine at Wal-Mart
1 Bar of SOAP -either an ALL natural organic lightly scented soap/Ivory/Fels-Naptha/Kirk’s Hardwater Castile (do NOT use a heavily scented soap though-it will be SUPER strong) I use Ivory so far.

I use a cheap (flat) cheese grater (NOT the box grater). Grate up the bar of soap and store in a small container with a few paper towels for a few days. This will take some of the moisture out of the soap. Ivory seems to have an almost greasy feel to it before you "dry" it.

Once you have dried your soap flakes, mix all ingredients together in an airtight container. You use 2 tablespoons per full load of laundry. THAT's IT! :)

Dishwasher Detergent:
1 cup of BORAX
1/4 cup of coarse kosher salt
1/4 cup of citric acid (or you can use 5 packets of lemonade/koolaid mix, as citric acid is a little more expensive and harder to find at times)

Mix all ingredients together and place in an airtight container. The koolaid DOES cause the mix to coagulate a bit, but you just break it up with a spoon (we've got a 1 tablespoon wooden spoon in our container). Place 1 tablespoon in the compartment where you close the lid, and about 1/2 tablespoon in the open compartment. Use white vinegar in your rinse aid well! I have put a few drops of orange essential oil in with the vinegar to keep it smelling YUMMY and fresh.

I haven't actually gotten around to making our toothpaste; we're finishing a tube of something. BUT with Camilla having her first tooth now, it's probably getting made up this weekend! I'll actually try to post pics of that! I know the ingredients are coconut oil (or other vegetable Glycerin), baking soda, peppermint oil (or you can use spearmint/cinnamon/other oils) and a small bit of salt (if you want) as an abrasive.

And what's for dinner tomorrow night? Homemade veggie burgers! Maybe I'll also make my vegan schnitzel over the weekend? OHHHH the possibilities! I love my life! :)
